Kinja'd!!!

I’d totally rock an Avalanche. Also, I wore khaki shorts to my eighth grade dance back in 2005.

What's wrong with an Avalanche? I would too, but it would be this colour.

I honestly don’t even remember what the gimmick with these was. Didn’t they do something weird with the back window or tailgate or something?

In my opinion, nothing. I've just heard a lot of people talk unnecessary smack against it.

I think you could extend the cab somehow...

The 2nd gen avalanche actually looked nice. I dig em. They aren’t terribly easy to turn into great off-roaders but they are plenty versatile.

Yeah, they had a midgate you could fold down to transport long cargo. Liked the Avalanche since the 2nd gen came out in 2006, love the Escalade EXT, too!

you could extend the bed into the cab but i forgot how it worked, i believe it made it a full 8 foot bed from tailgate to the front seats

Kinja'd!!!3

The back wall of the cab folded flat into the floor, turning a 5'6" bed into an 8' bed.

So basically, crew cab family trip hauler OR reg. cab long box pickup.

midgate

Kinja'd!!!

It worked, in that it did its function well and solved the problem it was intended to solve. It was something of a question no one was asking though. I still don’t quite get it most of the time. Basically its for if you if you want a 5 seat Tahoe for 90% of the time, a quad cab short bed truck for 9% of the time, and a suburban with all the windows down for 1% of the time.

The back bulkhead folds down so you can effectively extend the bed into the back seat area.

GM, continuing to hope that novel storage solutions will win the day. At least the Avalanche isn’t terribly ugly.

That's really what I love about it is the fact that it's a jack of all trades. Sure it didn't really excell in any area, but it's best shot was usually good enough.

Jack of all trades, master of none. For me at least, there isn’t much this does that an equally sized Suburban does better. The ONLY exception is that fact that you can haul tall or dirty things outside the cabin, provided that they have a footprint no bigger than 4x5 1/2 feet.

man those XUV’s were hideous. This had the same midgate, plus that stupid roof. bonus points for the XUV though was a novel (at the time) dual opening tailgate. Swing open or tailgate style. Also, the theory is that is was waterproof back there, so if you could get enough airbag to hold it up, you could make a makeshift hotub back there with a little heat exchanger off the coolant and some thick plastic or rubber sheet.

Isn't it the size of a Tahoe? I thought it was a little shorter than a Suburban. To me it has the same advantade of a crew cab pickup over a Suburban: the dirty stuff side you mentioned. It also has the advantage over the crew cab pickup of not haveing to be a mile long to get an 8' bed. Besides that, it won't be any worse off-road (or on-road for that matter) than a Suburban, and I wouldn't need any more than 5 seats anyways. Couple that with the fact that pickups tend to be easier to park (at least for me) than SUV's, and that I really like the looks, It would not be a tough sell for me.

I still hate them, mostly because of how narrow the bed is. yeah you’ve got the pockets on the sides, but honestly what are you gonna put in them? and cladding on the old one will always look bad. Oh and the interiors were very “2000’s GM”.

But I’m kinda a Hypocrite b/c I love these.

Kinja'd!!!

which have an equally inconvenient bed.

If you bought an Avalanche you should have just bought a Silverado crew cab, and if you bought a Baja you should have bought a wagon.

I’ve had an irrational want for a second gen one for a while now. Might still buy one to accompany my M3 in a few years.

My dad had a gen 1 Avalanche and I have fond memories of that truck. It was that awesome sunset orange color. Truthfully, I hated it when I first saw it. All that plastic cladding.....but.....then I drove it. It was a beast. Z71 off road pkg. Fun to drive around with all of the windows down and the rear window removed! *The bed had insulated pockets with drains; dump ice & beer in there and it’s a truck with built-in coolers.

We took a family trip from Ohio to Oklahoma. It was comfortable on a long voyage. Pop really put it through some paces out in Oklahoma. He tore ass and kicked out the back end on some gravel backroads. We cleaned it up and Pop pointed out knicks in the cladding. Those would’ve been large chips in the paint. That cladding was functional.

The Avalanche also lived up to its name by handling well in heavy snow.

I recommend owning one. My dad still kicks himself from time to time for trading it in on a bigger (but not nearly as fun) truck
